Comp 224/224 .581/.581 112 in 5.3?

Default Comp 224/224 .581/.581 112 in 5.3?

Just as the subject says... How would a Comp 224/224 .581/.581 112 do in 5.3? It is used out of a friends SS and I can pick it and 918 springs up for $350. Would it be worth the money to buy it and an adj timing chain and advance it a few degrees to keep the rpm down or just wait and get a good custom grind? Would I need heads to get full potential of this cam? Not sure what lobe profile or if there is any advance already ground in.

BigKid I would pass on that cam it's to big for a truck.A deal is only a deal if it's what you need.You'd need heads,gears and tuning to make it work.

On a 3200 or less converter and stock 5.3 heads, it may sound nice, but would be a dog. Major tunning changes would be needed also. One more thing I would not do with that much lift is use 918's. The cam would be fine with the following...
-no towing
-3500 or better stall
-stage 1 heads (preferably stage 2)
-double springs like Manley's

Sure your gonna loose a little down low, but you shouldn't be dissappointed.

The cam and springs will work fine with out head work. Go ahead and throw them in there just move the rev limiter to about 7k. If you have any doubts my cam is bigger than that with 918's.

i have a friend locally that is running a 226/226 .591 /.591 112 cam in his bone stock 5.3 and it will barely idle, down low it's just like stock but from 3600-4k up it is a freeaaak. if you can get the cam and want to do it then do it...it'll be fun, and when you get it tuned and a converter and heads it's be even more of a beast.

Well I already have a yank3000 and edit so... I am still undeciced if I want to do it. I found out that it is on XER lobes but still dont know if any advance was ground in. So keep the opinions comming cause I am still undecided.

Don't the XER lobes have 4* advanve ground in? If so this might not be too bad for the street and a topend screamer cam. I would give Comp a call and find out the powerrange of this cam before anything else.

Heck you may be able to sneak a few more degress of cam advance in when installing if the PTV clearances are okay. You would need a set of headers to get the most from that cam...many people install cams on stock heads too.

Either way this still is not a good truck cam, I'd spend an extra $100-150 for the correct cam, with less lift, that will make your truck faster in a more useable power area.

I already have headers too, Hamm mid-lengths with full freeflow exhaust and !cats.
I think it would be good for a 6.0 but a little big for my daily driven 5.3 but keep the opinions comming guys.

You can use the 918's, but for $50- 70 more, you won't have to replace them after 10k when they wear out. Still not sure that a 3000 stall will make you happy. To make a long story short, without head work, that cam is not a good idea. IMO
