I am at 11.3:1 CR without any issues with 93 octane and still able to run 26-27 degrees timing. A number of guys in the area I moved from were in the 12x range and doing fine on pump gas (93). Mine is a 4.040" bore, 236/243 cam.

I'm thinking 12:1 won't be much of an issue.

I hummored myself and called CompCams to see what they suggested, gave them all the specs they asked for, 408, 12:1 compression (that's to much for street), yadie yadie. They suggested a 222/224 114 cam. I asked how come that small, and mentioned that someone recommended a MUCH bigger cam, 248/254 113, and got laughed at. He said he didn't believe that it would fall out of a wet paper sack. That was WAY to much cam for a 4400 pound truck.

How high do you want to rev? How much stall will you put up with? how much gear will you run?

I agree with their cam choice. Id always rather under-cam than over-cam anyway.

I don't think that cam would be a performer. If I were shooting for a stock like motor, maybe so, but I don't see that cam netting the results I'm after.

I plan on a 3800 converter, roughly. I like my converters loose and hard hitting, so going a little bigger wouldn't hurt my feelings to much. 4400 would be the most.

I run 4.10 gears.

I'm not scared to rev a motor. After all ... I think I was the only one revving a 5.3 to 7k.

You'll certainly want more gear than a 4.10 if you have a 4000+ converter.

Are you going solid roller?

The best part about working with Comp is when you call up 5 times, get 5 different people, and 5 completely different recommendations.
