Default Converting a 4x4 to a 2 wheel drive

I don't need 4x4 anymore don't live in denver anymore. I am taking out transfer case front axel, cv half shafts and I am getting tail shaft and 2 piece driveshaft with carrier barring. I have to get a cutom tune for predator also. Anyways My question is has anyone done this and how much weight will I save. and how much reduction of time quarter mile will this help. Thanks. Jared

I would stay 4WD. It will definately come in handy for traction issues.

To me it's not worth the effort....there are 4x4's running low 12's all over the place, and the fastest truck on here is a 4x4 (parish8...10.91 @ 122mph)

I'd keep it 4wd........

I agree also, you can launch like a **** with 4WD or AWD which is what I have. It kicks *** to just hook up off the line and go.

Where are you located and is your truck a RCSB? I have been seriously considering converting mine to 4wd and my research indicates that an entire frame swap would be easiest. My buddy is a used car dealer and had a 2000 GMC 4wd that I have been considering buying to use as a donor then sell it as a 2wd when I am finished. I would rather just find someone to trade frames with.

I've been thinking about going 2wd - you're not alone, Jared.

I was just considering looking for a trashed 2wd ECSB at a junkyard and grabbing 4L60's tail-housing and driveshaft... I was hoping for a one piece shaft though. I haven't actually looked into anything yet.

I don't know how to handle the front CV's yet, but I know it can be done - it's done on the VHO's. (K1500 chassis, but 2wd).

All I can picture is all the weight I will be dropping. And actually having traction problems -- something I miss terribly.

The downside is that I would actually go through the trouble to put things back to 4wd for winter use.

I would at least consider pulling the t-case, and front driveshaft, to bolt up the 2wd goods to get some clean "non guiltly feeling" dyno runs in.

One thing to note: It's a lot easier going 4wd to 2wd, than 2wd to 4wd.

Well The swap is done. It took only 4 hours. It was a whole lot easier then I had thought. And traction problems. I have ET streets. Launches hard. I am going to be selling everything cheap. Looking for a 4l60e 2wd to even trade. I am located in great bend kansas. The truck feels a whole lot faster and the t-case isn't off yet. Thats the only thing I have left to do.
