Default Trans Conveter Replacement

4wd ex cab. Going to be putting in a 3000 rpm converter. My question is what is the easiest way to replace it. Meaning did you guys with 4wd remove the torsion bars and crossmembers to do it? Tranny was replaced by the dealer under warrenty long time ago. This is the first time for me to take the tranny out of my truck. Working as a tech at a school I have access to lifts, tranny jacks etc. We just dont get a whole lot of new vehicles to play with except for donations from gm so this is why I ask. My service manuals and All Data dont even state you have to remove the tranny crossmember to remove the tranny . Anyway what has been everybodys experiance? Can the tranny slide far enough back to just swap converters, or do I need to remove everything to make it easier? Thanks for the help guys.

You may be able to fanagle a few things to keep from removing some things, but in the long run, it usually takes less time overall to remove what's in the way. I had to drop my transfer case, tranny crossmember, and both head sections of my exhaust. I think the easiest way to do the converter change is to get it in a area that you have room to work. The last thing you want is to not get the new converter past it's three seals just becuase you didn't have the room to twist and turn it the right way. JMO.

I think it can be done without removing everything. On my 99 truck, I had more room under there than my 03 does. I replaced my whole trans when I did my converter swap, but I think it had enough room to slide back for the converter install. The 03 is a tight fit. GM riveted the torsion bar support to the frame instead of using bolts like my 99 had.

No, but we do have ASE Master Certification. I get the GM hookups through the local GM dealer. Was in AYES but it was a pain in the *** to deal with in such a small town.
