Angry Cooling Problem

Okay, truck overheated Fri. night the little message center said "CHECK COOLANT TEMP" I looked down and it was at 260 . So I turned it off and let it sit came back to it that night started it up and ran fine. I even reved it up and stuff still no Overheating problem. Then Sat. I drove about 20 miles pulling a trailer droped the trailer drove about 15 miles picked up another trailer then drove about 8 miles and it started to overheat again. Then I parked it again and let it sit until Sunday then I drove about 20 miles and had no problems. Now today I put a new Thermostat in and thought that would fix things. BUT NO drove about 15 miles and it got up to about 220 and then back down to 190 then after about 5 miles up again ti 220 or so then stayed at 210 for a while. Now it is parked again, I want to know WHAT IS WRONG why is it being so funny hot cold hot cold hot ..... the truck is a 99' and does have 137,500 miles on it but again why the wild changes? The only thing I can think of is at about 110K I flushed out the whole thing and put the green stuff in there and it has fuc*ed something up. And to top it off some JERK OFF smashed in to my fender Wed. night and I had to drill holes in the fender to pull it out so I could open the door (dukes of hazard just aint my style) Sorry this is so long just wanted to get it all out there!!

First I'd check and see if there's any junk in front of the radiator...maybe even stuck between the radiator and condenser. When I pulled my radiator this weekend, I found a bunch of fun stuff in there. Make sure that there's some tension on the fan clutch when you spin it after it's gotten hot (engine off) Since you already did the t-stat, my next guess would be that the waterpump fins may have rotted away. Hopefully you don't have an air pocket...especially one that's caused by a head gasket problem.

z7199, when the temp starts rising are you sure the fan is still spinning? What level is the coolant at in the tank when it's that hot? Mine almost overheated and my electric fans had quit working. It doesn't take much stop and go driving to bring that temp up. Other than that I would agree with the others that you may have an air pocket in the system.

Budhayes3, quick question. Where did you buy your 34" rad and how much? I'm planning on swapping my 27" rad for the larger too. By the way I'm two towns over from you in Bergenfield; we should check out each other's rides one day.

As far as I know yes the fan is spinning and the water is a little above the cold full line. Also if there is air in there HOw do I get it out?

intresting little delemia you got going on there.. i'd have to say its the water pump. How you describe that temp jumping up and down, seems like a pump problem. If you find out for sure its the pump, i'd say go ahead and save up for an electric one, one less pulley the engine has to turn

Wow, small world! Another one of our members is right in Englewood! I go through Bergenfield all the time. I got my rad from the radiatorbarn.com, it was about $237 shipped.
