You'll get different opinions on this...

I've heard of electrolysis issues with dexcool, and I've heard that some green coolant is not compatible with dexcool. However, there's some green coolant that specifically state on the bottle that it is compatible with dexcool. I'm running the green stuff in my 5.3 without issues.

What's wrong with the Dex-cool?
The dex-cool has corrosion inhibitors for the aluminum heads and parts on our trucks that the coolant runs through.
Walmart sells a coolant that is compatible and of the same color that the dexcool is. It's also already a pre-mixed solution.
If you keep it flushed every 60,000K, you will never have a coolant issue.

I'm a fan of the newer dexcool myself, I lhaven't had any problems with mine and haven't heard of any with other GENIII engines either. Not sure why folks like to flush it out and go back to older technology, but hey, to each his own. The early gen dexcool had some issues with sludging in the 4.3's, but that has since been remedied. The only things that I've heard that dexcool is touchy with is 1) it must be mixed with distilled water or advanced corrosion will occur and 2) it shouldn't be mixed with the green stuff.

FWIW, there are now a few coolants on the market that are compatible with all coolants...I've used the Prestone version of it on some side jobs. I like to get the 50/50 pre-mixed stuff, so I don't have to worry about getting separate distilled water and mixing it. We also have another manufacturer's version of it at the dealership I work at...it's yellow and takes on the color of the coolant it's mixed with. (I think the Prestone stuff is light green)

This is exactly what I've been told the issues were with Dexcool. It works great but can easily be contaminated by pretty much anything other than distilled water.
