Default Diablo, Nelson, Tbyrne, LS1 Edit?

I have been researching all of the tuning options for the ls1 based motors and it has left me feeling a bit overwhelmed. I used to own a mustang and tuning without being on a dyno was a no-no because tuners were able to extract the most power possible when the car was being dynoed with all critical information being measured. Now I see that alot of people are just sendigng their ECM to get reprogrammed by someone that has a 'generic' tune for their current mods. So this brings me to my question. Would I be better of going with a handheld tuner such as the Diablo Predator that comes with a tune designed for the 5.3 from the factory and then after modding i can have it programmed at a Diablo dealer on a dyno? Or should I persue an edit type tuner where I call someone and they gather all information from about my mods and where I want to go with the truck?

Me personally, I would rather have EDIT and some logging software, or HPTuners (an all inclusive package) and do it all myself. There is a bit of a learning curve involve, but if you are an old hot rodder, you should be able to figure it out.

so with this HPTuners package is there a way to monitor in real time O2 levels and timing? Better yet does this system log it for you through wide open runs? The only reason I ask is because of the importance of these two things during tuning. It would be cool to see the log of the past run and correct the curve righ then and there, but scary at the same time.

In a one word answer ... Yes.

Logging software will get all the data you could ever want. Coolant temp, intake air temp, timing, o2 sensor readings, speed, rpm, air flow, etc, etc.

has anyone compared a Nelson tune that has been 'shipped' to you to one that he has tuned on the dyno?

What would be the best logging software? I have been looking at Auto-Tap, but is there anything better out there?

The HPTuners software comes the most complete, even includes the scanning stuff. I bought for the 99 Silvo but have the scanner stuff on the wife's 03 Trailblazer and co-workers 98 Silvo. Costs around $500 shipped but lets you tune just about ANYTHING. It does take some getting used to ( they all do ) but is much better in the long run vs. generic mail-in programming.

I have used EFILive and AutoTap, and I really like EFILive over ATAP. EFILive is so far ahead of ATAP it's not even funny.

If you want a full fledged scanner try the Ease software. They are a Tier 2 suppler and give you a full EPA scan (not only the PCM but can scan other computers in the car). Software and instructions are accurate and easy to use.
