Doing the 5.3 swap. Cam choice...
I know theres 100 million cam threads out there for the 5.3 but I am having a little trouble finding anyone in my shoes exactly. I dont want to waste $400 on a fresh engine build to tear it apart because Im unhappy with my choice.
Ive been primarily shopping Texas Speed cams simply because I can get a damn good mail order tube but am open to what ever. Heres my build specs.
1994 2wd SCSB
NV3500 from a late model s10. Tighter gear ratio with 3.49 first rather than 4.01
8.5 Ten Bolt, Detroit Tru Trac, 4.30s, 9in outers.
Roughly 3900ish pounds w/ driver.
Motor build is spec'd as follows
2003 5.3
.030 over 4.8 flat tops (for the hell of making it a 327 )
Stage 2.5 CNC'd 862 from texas speed. Milled .030
Flat tops and milled heads net me 11.1:1 static compression
Debatable depending on cam 1.75:1 Roller rockers
Head gaskets will be spec'd depending on thickness needed from proper squish. I have .4 compression to play with to be safe on 91.
The goal of the truck is to make a nice, fast enough daily driver. Im not afraid to drive something with a somewhat higher RPM range as the small block in it now comes on at 3000rpm. Granted I would prefer a tad lower. Im going to take it to the track once and a while and Im not looking for a bullshit peak horsepower number. Im not afraid to throw rod bolts in it to spin it either.
Now TSP suggested a 220/220 cam which is .581/.581 lift and he recommended a 112 LSA to bring the power in fastest. Its not that Im against the suggestion its just I dont really want to be left wanting more. Ive seen a couple guys running nice mid 12s with the 224/224 cam they have in a 5.3. I would be really happy with a time like that but dont want to kill the drive ability outright so Im looking for suggestions. Part of what scared me about the 220/220 from them is I felt like the guy had tunnel vision towards suggesting that cam the second I said it would be a DD. Secondly he said to only expect around 380hp at the flywheel which I was kinda of taken back at. This is my first LS build but to not even build a motor in the 400hp range was kinda odd sounding to me.
Thoughts suggestions comments?

yes use Kip from Cam Motion, COMP has had lots of QC issues in the last few months.
380 flywheel hp is stupid low, I made 389rwhp/366rwtq in my built 5.3 with stage 2.5 heads, and a tr224 on a 110 with full boltons. which is more like 480ish flywheel.
