They use the def to lower the NOx emmisions. Instead of using diesel fuel it uses the urea to clean the diesel particulate filter (DPF) during the active regeneration so to help bring fuel mileage back up. And now they have a special delivery truck for it to the truck stops.

Talked to some Ford techs and evidently if you let that fluid get too low, it will shut the truck off until you refill it. Sounds pretty lame IMO.
now where is the fun in that?!?!?!

32.5 percent high purity urea
Naturally, urea is produced when the liver breaks down protein or amino acids, and ammonia. The kidneys then transfer the urea from the blood to the urine. Extra nitrogen is expelled from the body through urea, and because it is extremely soluble, it is a very efficient process. The average person excretes about 30 grams of urea a day, mostly through urine, but a small amount is also secreted in perspiration.
Just pee in a bottle....damn, i thought this was a joke thread, now spraying **** in the exhaust is good for emmisions? What's next?

Yep even the new Ford powerstroke will have to use the stuff too! Thank the EPA for trying/successfully destroying diesel trucks. After that im sure the EPA and their hippie views will try to come after our trucks next

Yeah all of the new Dmax's, the new LML & LGH motors, will have the exhaust fluid. More power, better emissions, but yet less fuel milage.... Hmmm.

And the fluid freezes at +17* so they have a heater system set up. The ECM monitors fluid level and notifies the driver via the DIC at each stage of fluid level, if the fluid level reaches less than 10% capacity you will not be able to clear the message, after the tank reaches empty and after you turn the key off truck will default to 5 MPH, and GM roadside isn't going to cover tow calls for defaulted trucks and codes must be cleared to reset the system.

Just another good reason to never buy a new vehicle. Too much crap to go wrong.

Trever1t There is an internal sensor in the tank to measure the fluid in some way (not quite sure how it monitors it) to make sure it is the right urea fluid.
