I just did my freind's 96 Z28 10bolt last Friday and his pinion was a bitch to get out too. We were doing a gear swap so we didn't really care about the condition of the pinion. We had to hit it pretty hard. I think its mainly because of the crush sleeve, and the fact that his front pinion bearing was pretty shot. Give it hell.

Oh yeah, some stupid questions but what side are you hamering from, and is the carrier out? Just checking!

THe axle is in the truck still. The *** of the truck is in the air on jack stands. I really didn't want to pull the whole damn thing cause then I would have to bleed the brakes and all that .... It sounds like I just need a lift and a sledge hammer ... sledge hammer I got .. lift I don't.

Anyone got any other ideas?

I'm hammering the pis out of the threaded end ...

I don't mean the whole rear end, just the carrier...the part that has all the spider gears in it, the part the ring gear is bolted to. That must be completely out in order to get the pinion out. Plus you should hammer on the front (yoke) side of the pinion.

Yup ... that's all what I got going on. It took me freakin forever to get the carrier out too. I didn't realizxe those pins just slipped off. I thought they were like a traditional E-clip. I think tomorrow I'm going to get under there with a 8lb sledge and see if I can mash some fingers or something.

why are you taking the pinion out? If you're just replacing the stock diff with the eaton there is no need to do that. You swapping gears too?

That's already been asked ... yes, I'm swapping gears too. I'm taking it to the shop once I get the old diff back in and get it on a trailer.

If You use a magnet the c-clips will come right out. If your not changing the gears. You should be able to use the bearing shims that came out of the original carier. Just make sure you put them back where they came from. And make sure you torque it down and check the lash with a mic gauge. Better safe than sorry.
