If you have a reputable shop doing the work, just take it to them, and they will order you just what you need. I am really mistrusting of most shops myself, from experience, but I have been doing business with this one shop here in town for about 10 years. Mine had 6000 miles on it, and only the pinion bearing, and the carrier bearings had to be changed on mine. It cost me altogether with overnight on the bearings $80 for my new bearings, I changed my ring and pinion at the same time! If you got about 60,000 miles, I would still get the whole kit. If you are already going to have the rear end taken apart, it is that much easier to completely rebuild it, and it shouldn't cost any more for the work, but that also depends on the shop.

60,000 miles, go for it, the cost difference is not that much, and if you are going to keep the truck for a long time, that is one less thing to worry about.

I just bought one from the same place it sounds like and I am in the process of installing it now with a set of 4.10's. I got the new bearings and races with mine so I would have less chance of damaging them taking them off my old carrier. The difference between the older model carriers and the newer ones is the size of the hub (the section the bearing fits on). The new one are a larger diameter to accomodate for a breakage problem they had when they went from the 28 spline axles to the current 30 spline.I can't help you much about the shims, I have a large supply of 12 bolt shims that have a larger O.D. then the 10 bolt but I have a lathe also so it is no problem cutting them down to size.
