Default engine swap dilemma!! help!

alright ,weill i have a00 silvy with a 5.3 ,it has 215k on the speedo. the engine still runs god, but my oil pressure is a lil below 40psi at idle and my waterpump is leaking. so ive been wanting to replace the waterpump, timing chain, oil pump, gaskets, and throw in a cam while i was at it. but because of the motors high milage, i was thinking of just doing a whole motor swap.i really would like to have a 6.0 ltr. a few of my freinds have made the swap from 5.3's and ben happy thus far.ive found a few 6.0's LQ4's for around 800-1000$ long blocks. but... my buddy has a dissasembled 5.3 out of a 00' silvy with 60k on it torn down. he was gonna go through it and totally rebiuld it with heads and cam and replace all the bearings, but ran out of time and money. he says i can have the motor like it is .in stock trim for 300$.so all i would have to do is hone the cylinders and throw some bearings in it. so for about 500-600$ i could have an almost new motor. but its a 5.3. also my buddy is taking his ls1 out of his 98 fbody. it has 28k on it and just needs new rings and id go ahead and replace the bearings.he said i could get it for 750$ .i know everything pretty much is interchangable on all the motors. also the ls1 that my buddy is taking out of his hasa f4 cam in it that i could get also. what is my best bet. i dont want crazy power just a lil oomph and some good torque and reliability.thanks,denny.

you could also get the 5.3 from your friend and look on ebay and get some 5.7 piston and be cheap and easy.

but after the money for pistons, gaskets, bolts and the effort it would probably be cheaper to go with the ls1 and get the aluminum block as a bonus

Maybee Ill Buy The 5.3 Just To Have And Buy The Ls1 For The Swap. Will Everything Bolt Up Fromy My 5.3 On The Ls1,and Could I Use My 5.3 Heads On The Ls1 .direct Swap? Also Is 35psi Bad For Oil Pressure At Idle?even With 215k On The Speedo?

everything from your 5.3 would bolt up although i would be aware of the high milage pumps and timing chain.

your current 5.3 is probably still good if youve droven it like a normal person and changed the fluids every 3k. gen 3 chevy motors are da chit just watch the oil and water pump

yeagh i really take care of my motor and truck, overall ive been very happy. the only thing ive ever replaced on my truck is an idler pulley and battery.this is only my third set of brakes, still the original rotors! im pretty sure about getting the ls1, and i would definatelty put a new waterpump, timing chain, and oil pump on the ls1. im thinkin of going ahead and buying those parts now so when my buddy does his motor swap in his fbody ,ill have some of the parts alreadyor just putting them parts on my 5.3 now and see how far it goes then build the ls1 in my spare time..im thinking of getting my 5.3heads worked ,instead of keeping the stock ls1 heads.my buddy told me i would have to work them cause if i put the stock 5.3heads on the ls1 the compression would be to high, does that make sense?he said it would prolly be 13:1 . the way i look at it is i will have to do the same amount of work to either of the engines so i might as well and go ahead and get the ls1 and be done with it.will my intake bolt up to the ls1 also? sorry for all the questions.

Compression on the stock LS1 with 5.3 heads won't be 13:1 compression. It would be around 11:1. Also, if you decide to use the truck oil pan with the ls1, you have to use the truck windage tray. Found that out the hard way earlier today. Go ahead and get the LS1. Don't see the point in buying a 5.3 when you already have a 5.3. Even if it has fewer miles. Plus the extra displacement of the 5.7 LS1 will treat you nicely

thats what i plan on doing, is getting the ls1.so can i or cant i use my stock 5.3ltr heads?i really cant afford to get them worked or but new aftermarket ones right now. but my swap will be a slow biuld ,so well see what happens. can i use the ls1 oil pan in my truck? i also have 4wd, does that matter,as far as the oil pan goes? HEMIKILLER when are you gonna get some times up on that beast, that f13 is a great cam.

Why not just replace the water pump and see how many miles it will last? Maybe save up till after income tax time and get the 6.0 and some worked heads.
