Default exhaust with cams

does anyone know how to figure what exhaust setup would work the best with a certain cam?
i remember hearing where the LS1 hot cam, performs better with the stock exhaust manifold on it. ??? why was that, anyone know?

so, that got me wondering about the '01 LS6 Cam. what would the ideal exhaust setup for it be?

That is the purpose for a split duration cam is to make up for the decreased exhaust flow due to the smaller exhaust valves, and/or stock manifolds and exhaust. The hotcam has a very large split so it probablly would run better with a somewhat more restrictive exhaust. For a n/a application, if you already have a nice flowing exhaust (ie. headers/catback) a single pattern will more than likely work better for you.

I don't think I would go so far as to say any cam would run better with the stock exhaust manifold. Some cams....the Hotcam being a good example...will run better than other cams with the restrictive stock exhaust. Still, even with the Hotcam, you will be leaving alot of power on the table if you don't get headers and good mufflers. The idea exhaust setup for even a stock cam/engine is one that flows freely with very little backpressure and has the scavenging of long tube headers.

Unless it is a blown motor, then splits are good. I still don't know if that big of a split is good though.
