Exhaust welding- Mig or Flux-core wire?

If it's galvanized then their should be a yellowish smoke/dust when welding. From my experiences with the two, I would never pick up a flux-core gun when given the option.
If your having burn marks and discoloration, then it sounds to me like your gas isn't adjusted properly. You also said that flux core is for welding "dirty metal like rust"; if your trying to weld before cleaning away ALL surface rust or dirt, then I have no sympathy for you. If you have your gas/heat/wire speed adjusted correctly, and the surface your welding cleaned down to bare metal with a grinder or wire brush, I can't imagine any problems out of the mig. Unless something is wrong with the unit, I would say you just need to take a little more time prepping the material and adjusting your welder.
