Default FLP recommended a PI converter..

Just talked with Chuck a little while ago about a tranny. He said that He really likes the latest version of the PI 3-disk converter over the yanks. He also said something about the stall being around 2600-2800. What do you guys think?

He said that even with the procharger needing RPM's, the PI with the lower stall would be the way to go over my longtime plan of a PY3400E. Hmmm ???

PI makes a great converter and they are cheaper than Yank. I just qustion why a 2800stall on a centrifugal blower??? I would have said a min of 3200-3800 depending on your goals.

My thoughts exactly. I really have had my mind set on something above 3200.

Any other thoughts?

Trust me, you don't want that tight of a converter unless you are going to tow. I think for good performance with the ATI, a 3200 stall should be the absolute minimum. 3500 would be a good tradeoff between driveability and looseness. And IMO my 3800 is about as high as you want to go in a truck.

Another really important thing to consider is shift extension. Seems like the stock stall is around 3500rpm. The TT3000 is aroumd 3800rpm. My SS3800 is about 4800-4900rpm. This makes the biggest difference with a centrifugal. It pulls steadily through the gears without losing rpm and boost and falling flat on its face.

Have you driven a car/truck with a stall before?

I'd say talk to PI and try to get something that will stall in the 3500 rpm range with 4500-4800 rpm shift extension.

Yea, that's good black... I have an email in on one of those intercoolers.

Stall doesn't seem to be an exact science to me! I am thinking of staying on the tight side, in between 3000 and 3400 with the intention of a little spray when I really want to hit it hard. I haven't heard to many testimonials on a PI converter. The guy I bought my procharger from actually had a PI 3 disk a couple of years ago and said that he could hear the disks chattering at idle. I'm not really down with that. Chuck assured me that was probably due to an earlier design and that the PI product is absolutly top notch right now. ??

I've heard good things about the 3 disk PI. I doubt you'd have any problems with one.

Maybe what he could hear chattering was the procharger.

If you do a search in teh LS1 car forums I bet you find more people upset with Yank quality concerns or problems than you do PI.

I've had nothing but Yanks in most of my cars/trucks with the exception of 1 Art Carr unit and they have worked good. I also have lots of members in my LS1 based car club that have the PIs and have nothing but good things to say soooo. Either is a fine choice IMO.

I couldnt be happier with my PI. Are they still doing a free re-stall?? That was definately a bonus. After hearing Parish's experience with Yank, I wouldnt use one if it was given to me.

So are PI stalls just custom set for each application then? Probably was the procharger.. they're a little noisy!
