I agree with Parish on this. The 4l80e is too much for what I'll be doing. First and second gears are taller which takes up a lot of power. I believe a bunch of people are doing it for reliability.
Goshawk- I checked with slow and spoke with Bernard at Team Tripp. He recommends a no larger than a 10" converter with his tranny's. Mine's like 11" so he's not sure about warranty.
I pulled the pan down yesterday just to look and it wasn't in great shape. The fluid wasn't red it was more of a dark maroon. The magnet was covered with very fine metal and there was also tiny shavings laying in the bottom of the pan. The pan was lined with "black dust" that would come off by wiping my finger across it. I think it's on it's way out. I've decided to pull it out now and install.....built 60, 65, FLP
I have a couple of friends that run ext. cabs with modded 6.0's with built 60e's and been holding up pretty good. one of them runs like 12.6x's. Don't know how long that will last though. I thinking I'll either get a 65 built or have Chuck fix me up.

I think you would be safe with either of the two 4l60es. I've heard good things from both flp and team tripp(I love mine!). Mine hasn't so much as hiccuped yet, and I've been pushing it pretty hard. Good luck on your decision, and hope the stock one doesn't leave you stranded anywhere.

I just installed a level 5 in mine and waiting till I get 500 miles to nail it but I shifts great alot better than my built 65e. Just riding around b/f when it shifted it would throw you back in the seat and now just cruising around it shifts hard but not so extreme. My wife even says it shifts so that she would drive it again.

So what your saying is the level 4 or 5 would be better then getting a shop to build a 65e?

I have a friend who is a GM certified transmission mechanic who could build my 60 to a 65 with new clutch packs, five pinion planetaries and a couple of other different parts. I just don't know if this would be as reliable as the flp?

Then that would tell me to get the 4l65 lv 4-5 so you dont have to worry about it later, of course if you werent planning on going much further than you are now, then screw it 4l60 it up and take it as far as it will go. But if you plan on runnin low 11's or 10's id suugest stepping into the FLP 4l65e Lv4-5 upgrade!!

I'm shooting for mid-high 11's. No roll cage for me. So level 4 60e would be strong enough? Thanks for all the replies fella's.

Harder is not better.. its just harder and more abusive to parts. My 700R4 that Ellis Groo built shifted smoother and FASTER than another 700R4 that I had that had a regular shift kit style HARD shift. Guess which one has lasted better and is still in my garage? The smooth one!
