Default Found out what is wrong with my rear-end

Well, took my truck by the shop this morning and took the owner for a ride, so he could hear the sound. He said something was wrong for sure and that he would take everything out and see what was wrong. He called me a little while ago with the bad news. He said that it was a bad set of gears and that they were just eating away at each other. Brad said that it looks like they weren't heat-treated from the factory. I'm trying to get a set overnight, that way they'll be in tomorrow in time for the track meet saturday.

That sucks. Go with Motive or Yukon. I have heard nothing but good things from them.

Strange gears are the way to go, but a proper break in procedure is part of the heat treating process. If you get new gears it, DO NOT go to the track Saturday. You need to put the gears through several heat cycles before you thrash on them. This could be why your previous gears got screwed up. 500miles is the average for a proper break in. The guy that installed them is in question too. As far as the gears not being heat treated, its hard to just "see" heat treatment, and if the gears were as worn as you say, then the heat treatment could've worn off. Just go easy on the new set for awhile.

Richard----I told you that is what I thought it was yesterday didnt I? You should have let Brad order you the gears and you would have gotten Strange.

Actually I talked to US gear(Strange) when I got mine done and the tech guy up there said that as long as I did about 5-6 heat cycles I would be fine going to the track the next day. He said as long as I dont drive on 2-3 hour trips for the 1st 200 miles or so that after the heat cycles it was all good. I went to the track the next day and it was all cool!

That's fine I understand, and I agree with the 5-6 heat cycle thing. But I know with the amount I drive, I would probably only have 3 (max) heat cycles if they were installed late Friday and raced early Saturday. I wouldn't have 200miles on them either.

I've always wondered about the whole break in thing anyway, because there are drag cars using the same gears as us, and they are putting 4 digit hp/tq #'s down. Do they break them in around town (200+miles), and do they do heat cycle thing? Probably not, and yet they seem to be abusing them run after run. I dunno?

I personally think the guy set them up wrong. It's pretty hard to trash a set of gears that quick, even if you didn't follow a break in procedure.

Richard let me get this straight, you have wasted countless hours over the gears Futrell sent you! how much time have wasted on a set of **** gears ? Not to mention the money you are about to be out for Brad reinstalling some more **** gears. I hope he doesn't charge you for all the time he has spent on trying to help you out. You should have listened to me & mike & had Brad order you some real gears, who is going to pay the labor if you get another set of bad ones. I bet you might get an apology but nothing else.

I hate to hear about that though, I must tell you that when you use someone like Brad (B&MRacing) you not only get personal service, but you do not have someone trying to sell you something based upon there margins & what they have the best pricing on. I am in no way degrading anyone, but Brad builds real cars, from the ground up, he might not have the markeeting savy that others do or tell you what you want to hear, but think about how much of his time & energy we have wasted & given him what in return? He has to feed his faimily too. If I was to give anyone my business it would be him.

Yeah, everything these last few weeks has been because of a bad set of gears. I'm out of pocket big time on this bullsh*t. I'm fixing to call moser right now and bitch them out about this **** & I want them to pay for the 2nd installation charge because of their shitty gears.
I just ordered some Yukon 3.90 gears from randy's ring and pinion overnight. They should be at B&M by 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. I'll be breaking in these new gears all friday night and saturday morning. I plan on doing 4 or 5 (10 miles the first time and 10-20 the others) heat cycles friday night and a at least 3 or 4 (10-20 miles each one) saturday morning. After that I should be fine, huh?

I would suppose your "I Dunno" explanation is the most accurate phrase I have seen you write. The reason drag cars do not heat cycle is because they are only traveling 1/4 mile at a time. How much heat would you say is generated? The reason for heat cycling is that you want to expose them to small incraments of heat until they have time to properly mesh together. Once everything has meshed the friction is reduced therefore allowing you to drive it like you stole it. The density & hardness of aftermarket is different than factory.
