I thought the intake tube just muffled some sound....just less turbulence now so better air flow? Is that the more air reasoning?

If you really feel this is true, then please explain why:

1) the MAF table in LS1Edit (or other tuning programs) has to be recalibrated after you pull the screen.....

2) there are RECALIBRATED MAFs on the market.....

same way you would with a screened MAF.......on a dyno

It will be more "powerful" (usually) as you are flowing more air but the largest power increase is from:

1) the reduced load (the MAFs now inaccurate reading) will cause the computer to push a little more advance into the system.

2) the leaning out of the system will make more a little more power (this is kind of a hit or miss though....some vehicles can already be a tad lean from the factory so if it goes too far lean you start to loose power)

In the days before LS1Edit, this is one of the ways a person would go about increasing spark advance and a little leaner mixture.

yep....it muffles sound....but just like a muffler, it does that sound reduction by causing back pressure so the sound waves can be dampened out. By removing the "mufflers" from the intake tube, you now have a smooth pipe (think difference between Bullet straight through mufflers and big stock mufflers with baffles) with much less resistance to flow.

Sure after you explain to me why a sensor made to measure the amount of air flowing thru a space would have a "given amount of flow" considering that amount changes depending on throttle position.

When the MAF was first put into service on whatever GM vehicle, it was first flowed. If you read the MAFs output it is some frequency (let’s just take 5000 for now). At that frequency the amount of air that is flowing through the MAF was recorded (lets say 300CFM) and put into the computer. The computer now knows that if the MAF is reading 5000 then it must be flowing X amount of air.

Well when you go and descreen this MAF, you change how the air is flowing through the MAF in addition to an increase the flow through the MAF. This increase is not completely picked up by the MAFs elements so it is off by some percentage. The recalibrated MAFs use a resistor to try "fudge" the signal and tell the computer "hey...more air" but because the MAF signal is not linear and neither is the flow, it does not really work. This is why so many people say "DO NOT MESS WITH YOUR MAF!" Without the ability to actually measure the MAFs output frequency on a flow bench and say "at 5000 we are now flowing Y CFM of air", you will never get it perfect.

Hmm.. ok well that definitly sounds right. Ill have to go ahead and take your work for it cause I know I didnt design the MAF nor study its workings

bahahaha....I win.....

j/k dude........guess I should have posted that up the first time...the "given flow" part did sound kind of funny how I did it.....

besides.....I WISH I had designed the MAF......then I could be rolling in $$$ and could play with my car all the time
