mine outlasted most...about 170k miles on my original...
after removing the arm and float from the old one I noticed how loose and sloppy the "potentiometer" was compared to the new one...
in regards to the lifespan of the new one...
both Chevron TECHRON Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner

and Valvoline MAX Life complete fuel system treatment claim to prevent the degrading of the sender...not restore one however...
I believe Valvoline has replaced the MAX Life w/ this:

Are you SURE the sending unit is shot?
If your needle is jumping around it may be the stepper motor at the back of the guage cluster...alot more common than the sender being faulty.

the sulfur in the fuel, over time degrades the sending unit that sits in fuel 24/7...
I'm no GM Tech, but that's the first time I've ever heard of the stepper motor as a cause...
as far as mine goes...it was the sender...works great now
quicksilverado changed out his recently...same results
just glad that the sender is available separately now...GM w/ arm and float ($100)...e-bay w/o ($25)

Ahh...OK.
In the OBS's it's more commonly the stepper motor.
Needle goes crazy and sometimes moves so quickly it looks like a Hummingbird. Other times it just 360o laps.
