Talking G80 Bomb!

Well as some of you may already know, I grenaded my G80 at the thunder shootout this past weekend. I was going for my attempt at a 12.7x but didnt make it past the 60' mark. Fortunately a local gear shop (Zimmer Gear in Baton Rouge) had an Eaton Posi on the shelf and was gratious enough to go up there at 8:00 on a sat night to get it an press new bearings in it for me. I tore out my old locker sat night and installed the Eaton at the track sun morning and was racing that afternoon. HERE are the pics I shattered all the spider gears, sheered the pinion set screw, bent/wore the main pin, cracked the carrier housing and some other things. I should have the video of the breaking run soon.

EDIT: The vid is now in the same directory as the pics.

What's the difference between the 10 bolt G80 and the 14 bolt G80 ?? (or is there one ??)...I ask because I have NEVER had an issue with mine, I get smooth posi burnouts, hard launches with no peg-leg action and unless I have one tire in gravel or on wet pavement and punch it I ALWAYS spin both tires, even from a roll in first I spin both of them

Well mine has been acting up for a while now. It would lock when it is supposed to be unlocked or unlocked when is should be locked. I think it would have held up fine till I started doing burnouts to heat up the ET streets and spraying out of the hole. It is just not made for that type of application.

I think that's what would have happened to mine if I did not catch it in time. I sheered the pinion set screw, bent/wore the main pin too. Don't have pics of the diff but here is a pic of my cover.

Look at all those shavings.

I am glad you caught yours in time. I had a friend that caught his and did the same as you described. It is kinda embarrasing getting out and pushing you truck off the track in front of hundreds of people, but it is also maked you feel kinda proud that you had enough power to do it.
