Most gears have a backlash between .008 and .012. My Richmond gears specified .008.

I've been told that a shift will be harder with a lower gear.

It will be a lot more noticable, If you have ever put a 4x4 in low range and got on it through the gears you can really notice a difference in the shifting but it has nothing to do with the transmission it is the reduction in gear ratio that makes the vehicle react quicker which gives the feel of a harder shift.

Not trying to insult or anything, but when you set the backlash, make sure your carrier bearings are preloaded. This makes a difference. Also, would be a good time to mark the teeth to make sure your contact pattern is right.

.008 to .012 is a good range. Should be no more than .003 variation though.
