Gear Questions? Please HELP!!
I have 3.42s with a powertrax locker with 275/60/16 tires, I think they are just under 29 inches. I want to feel some more low end torque. It is a daily driver, i get around 18-19 mpg right now. I'm looking to buy some 3.73 or 4.10 gears. I don't really want my mpg to drop to far down. i would like to get the eaton posi the powertrax is a little to aggresive for street use. Could i install the eaton or would i have to get someone else to do it? I've done a lot of searching but still not sure what to do. What do ya'll recommend between these. thanks in advance

There is a calculator for you to determine what speeds you would see with the new gears. Our tranny is the one selected by default.
I think I will probably go with 4.10's on a 29-30 inch tall tire when I finally do regear mine if I ever have to. I plan on using the Eaton posi one day.
I couldn't tell ya about the install, everyone else usually says if you've done one before, go for it, but if not get it done.

If you have some mechanical ability then you can make the swap yourself, You need an indicator to check your backlash in your current setup and then itstall your new carrier with close to the same amout. You will probably need an assortment of shims, whatever you add to one side you have to subtract from the other untill you get the desired amount of backlash. You want to have enough shims to make your carrier fit snug in your housing.
If you don't do much long highway driving I would go with the 4.10's

You don't really need a book but you could do a search on gear setting and get some info, since you don't have to remove your pinion gear its not as complicated as you might think. Check to see what backlash you have now then pull your axles and remove the 4 bolts that hold your carrier in (mark your caps so you put them back on the same side) note about how much effort it takes to remove you old carrier (you might not get quite that much unless you have a special tool for spreading your housing which you don't need). Swap your Ring gear to your new carrier (left hand thread on the bolts) and torque to spec usually around 60 lbs. Chances are that the shims in there now won't be the right combination but they would be a good starting place. Again search the web for gear setting and read up on setting your backlash, ignore pinion setting and pinion preload. Adjust to the same backlash.
