Hey know from experience g/f dad, had brand new 05 2500 C-cab, 8.1L with Allison,4x4, K&N CAI, Flowmasters, Superchip, and 4:10's. He got anywhere from 7-10 mpg. The truck really has great sound with a good exaust system. Power wise I was not impressed with the truck. He put 4000 on it and got rid of it. Got a C-Cab 02 Duramax 2500 4x4 with put just chip, and 38in M/T, 8in suspension, 3in. body, and that truck will run away from that 8.1L. He hated the 8.1 because they were not offering alot of aftermarket stuff for it, and the Gas Milage. But great buy on your truck you got a good deal.

The mileage isn't going to be comparable. The DMAX will win in a landside there. Without getting into a debate over DMax vs. 8.1, the 8.1 was easily the right choice for me here, and that's with trading off for the much lower mileage. For what I paid for this truck, it would take a lot years for a comparably equipped DMax to equal the difference in gas savings. Sure the Dmax is easier to mod, but by the time I'm done with my 8.1, I'll probably have a Whipple, a cam, headers, springs, custom tune, and some other stuff done and still be a good bit ahead on price. The truck is a DD so I'm not looking to go insane on the mods, but do want it be able get quite a few kills too. The same truck I got with a Dmax would have run me at least $35K and probably more. This was one of those "in the right place at the right time" type of deals. You can't compare my situation to choosing between two regularly priced trucks, one with a DMax the other an 8.1.
I've seen people claim anywhere from 8-14 MPG empty with their 8.1s. Given my driving habits, I'm expecting to average around 10. I don't tow, but do haul quite a bit. My mileage would drop off by 2-3 MPG with my 6.0 when I was hauling a heavy load, I'd expect around the same drop off with the 8.1. A Dmax for me would have probably been 15-17 MPG empty and less of a drop when hauling. However a DMax would have been a bad choice for me. I do way too many short trips and would be causing issues with the diesel.

Typical. Why is it anytime we have a discussion on 8.1 a d-max guy has to but in like this?
My advice is to be helpful or stay out!

There really is no best motor option but there is the best motor option for the person who is buying that truck (how is that for politically correct? ). I sold my supercharged 8.1 Suburban and bought an '05 Duramax (cc, lb). Awesome truck that gets anywhere from 15-18 MPG depending on how I drive. A slightly heavy foot will give me about 14 with a mix of country road/highway driving. My Suburban would get about 10-12 (not towing) and the lifted Silverado usually sees 8-10.

As far as the mileage goes, it's actually irrelevant to me. I'm a self-employed general contractor. My customers end up paying for my gas. I could care less if the Dmax gets 40 MPG and my 8.1 gets 3mpg. I keep punching it the way I have been, and it just might only get 3 MPG

I have drove both and I have plenty of experience with both buddy. I didn't mean to bust yall in the ***** or anything. The 8.1L with a exaust system sounds really mean. I was just making my opinion. The power was just not what we expected it would be from a 496c.i., and gas prices the way they are getting 8-10 MPG was going to be expensive. Hey the boy got a great deal on his truck and he got it. I'm not Bashing on the 8.1L cult. Is all in what you wantttt
