Default GM Hot Cam on 5.3L???

Anybody put the GM LS1 Hot Cam in their 5.3L? How does it does lope? I have a 2005 Z71 and I am wondering if I will still have enough low end to pull a boat occasionally if I use that cam?

A few, nothing special, probably not.

Go with a smaller cam better suited for a heavy *** truck. Search around on here, you'll find 50 threads asking the same questions you just asked.

Search for threads started by me there is a thread i started about a month ago has some info, even a video link of a truck with a 5.3 and that cam. But do your research, you could spend about another 150-200 or so, and get alot more power.

Forget about the "lope". I don't understand why all these "how does it lope" questions are suddenly popping up. If you really want your motor to fight to stay alive at idle, have your tuner bring the idle RPM's down during it's tune. Remember, this is a computer controlled 21st century small block, not your daddy's muscle car with a 572 big block with a 7000 rpm camshaft.

Try the 2001 LS6 camshaft instead if you're looking for the same trailering dependability with a fun top end. You can find a gently used one fairly cheap if you frequent the classifieds and you'll keep the low end torque you're after to get the heavy Z71 moving. Mid range will improve quite a bit with an extended top end range. You'll have power where you need it, fun where you want it. In a 5.3L, I always suggest the 2001 LS6 cam first because it's cheap, and requires cheap .550" springs which are only $53 dollars brand new for the whole set.

2001 LS6 cam
207/217 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
116 LSA

vs

GMPP Hot Cam
218/227 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
112 LSA
