Hand helds
Ok Ok, I know the Nelson, and Wester's tunes are MUCH better than any hand held, but I'm just not quite ready to go that route yet. I downloaded the instructions from the Street & Performance Electronics web site for their "Pro Flash" hand held. In it there is a section under "engine tune" that are settings for torque management ignition timing and fuel curve alterations. Is this something different from the other hand helds, or do they all offer it. I thought torque management could only be modified by someone with the appropriate ls1edit programs.

Predator (Fbody anyway) suppresses torque
management, adds ~ 6 degrees of spark
(you can alter +/-3) and does not change
power enrichment (you can alter +/- 5%).
You do not get to modify TM, just delete.
Some Predator vendors can go further with
custom tunes on a one-on-one basis. Seen
a new handheld that comes with several
tunes already there, to choose from. But
all of them fall far short of the capabilities
you get in PC-based scanner/logger tools
and editing/flashing tools.
In HPTuners I have modified my TM to make
a 400lb-ft "flat cap" on transmission input
shaft torque (including converter multiplication),
changed spark advance only at higher-MAP
(higher CylAir) regions, altered part-throttle
up/downshift & converter lockup, etc. Many
things not on the handhelds' "McDonalds menu".
You should compare any handheld price to HPTuners
(the only do-all tool currently on the market).
If you own a laptop it's pretty near a no-brainer.
