Default Have a few dead spots in powerband...gears or converter?

When I punch it at ~35 and after 65 I have some "dead" spots. It's real sluggish for about 2 or 3 seconds when I punch it at ~35mph.

After 65mph is the worst. Instead of downshifting into 2nd like it used to, it shifts into 3rd at ~2700-2900rpms.

It sucks big time, especially when I got little crappy cars throwing revs and then I can't really go anywhere. Don't get me wrong, my truck will run real good, but I have to be at the right speed for it to do so.

So what should I get to solve that problem? Higher gears (4.10s) or a 2400-2600 stall. (I don't really want to go any higher on the stall) I eventually want to get both, but I need to try and fix this problem first.

Definitely go with the converter. First of all, gears won't give you any additional shift extension...a converter will. A converter will cover the dead spot in the powerband.

Gears will help with launch off the line, but not like a converter. The first converter I put in my Tahoe (Yank Truck Thruster 3000) dropped my ETs 6 tenths! Gears won't give that kind of gain.

I still get 21 mpgs on the highway with my 3.42 gears. It would drop down to 19 if I had 4.10 gears.

Gears also require programming changes (an added expense)...converter does not. Do you see a trend here?

A 2400-2600 stall won't give you very much more shift extension.

With my TT3000, my shift extension went up about 300 rpm. It did fix the dead spot, but I really don't think that low of a stall would.

Go with a Truck thruster 3000, you WON'T be sorry.

After you get a stall, you'll realize a 3000 stall isn't high at all. It took me about 5 seconds to get used to mine. I'll never own another automatic without one.

My SS3800 is on the way.

BTW, Patrick's right, gears won't help at all.

They will only lower the dead spot to about 32mph, it'll still be just as bad.

What will help my shift extension? The stall ratio? Is there any way to get a 2400-2600 converter with a higher stall ratio?

Thanks for your help guys!

Patrick might want to chime in on this, but I think that the diameter of the converter has to do with shift extension. Smaller= more shift extension.

I'm sure there are alot of other factors too like internal clearances and blade angles. I think higher STR will bring shift extension down some.
