Head Experts inside please
alright fellas, here in the near future, i am planning on getting some better flowing heads to pick up my n/a numbers..
i am NOT, however, going to spend a fortune on a cnc'd complete head from any company. i have a friend that has his own machine shop, and build nothing but race motors... he is very good with head work.
my question is... i have 862 casting on my 4.8, NON- Flex Fuel, and i am wondering what is the best stock head i can pick up for cheap and have him work over for me, that would suit my combo best.
i think 243 heads are a little large for my lack of cubes, and would not work well with my combo...but i could be wrong. i know they are easy to pick up for $400-500 complete.... just not sure that is what i need. i also think 317 casting are a little too much, and may hurt my compression ratio and/or bottom end acceleration.
i am thinking that there is probably a 5.3 head that would be a good upgrade, as far as valve size, for my 4.8. i am wanting to retain the same valves that come in whichever head i choose, and have my friend work them to achieve the flow number we are searching for. i will also have them milled .030" to bump up compression..
any help or suggestion from a knowlegdable source would be appreciated.
thanks.
