Angry Help with gutless '05 5.3L

Just got a 2005 4x4 ext cab with the all alumnium block 5.3L. The problem I'm having is the motor has no low end power at all. If it doesnt downshift it wont take off, and sometimes it just doesnt like to downshift. Above +- 2800 RPM or so it pulls great. Althought the '05 will flat out leave my old '95 TBI 350 from a dead stop, there are certian times where the '05 would have some catching up to do because either the 350 had the torque and didnt need to downshift or it would when it needed to. Also, the '05 has 4.10 gears.

I guess my question is what can I do to give the little 5.3 some real grunt power?

Thanks,

Mike

Its time for a tune... My friend just got an 05 ext cab and that thing is a pig from a stop but he can pull me from about 55mph roll.. The TM in those things are horrible.. Exhaust, Tune should get that sucker rolling pretty well..

My truck is the same way. I put in a Magnaflow, K&N, Shorties- no noticeable gain. I think what it really needs is a stall and tune.

without a doubt, start with a new tune. the programming is very soft in that truck and will make a huge difference in how it drives all over the powerband.

I agree, A tune and a converter, then save some money to buy new rear tires.

If you can I would do a cam, converter, and tune at the same time. Doing things one at a time is frustrating and those 3 would make you truck a totally different animal!!

I'm not sure I'd be ready to "dig into" an '05 motor just yet for a cam swap. The converter and tune may just be what you're looking for. If you do however feel froggy....leap! A cam swap definately helps make power...and there are plenty of cams out there that are (or can be tuned to be)as "drivable" as a stock cam. Its just that opening up a brand new motor for a cam swap isn't exactly for everyone. I guess neither is putting a 3000 stall converter either now that I think about it.
