So... the first Comp 918 valve spring on the #7 cylinder broke along the topmost coil, dropping the valve into the cylinder. The spark plug wasn't damaged, but I didn't pull the head off yet to see what kind of mess there is.
I don't remember the spring batch#, but I remember the julian date showed them manufactured in late May 2006. They had a blue or green stripe. It was hard to tell which color it originally was, it is kind of a shade in between the two.
Anyone ever dropped a valve and NOT have catastrophic damage?

I wish they would have at least sent notices out to the 918 customers to let them know the springs were defective. Do a search for broken 918 and look how many hits you get. Unfortunately, I never ran across one of those threads until this happened.

Man, that sucks!
When you see guys looking to buy parts you see others always recommend the best manufacturer. Most of these guys have learned the hard way.
The reason I state that is because most all "performance products" have a limited warranty that only covers the product itself. Thats why you buy the best product because usually it will be of better quality and wont fail unexpectedly.
I would contact Comp. and see what they will do but expect a reply similar to this:
"So you broke a spring and ruined a piston, unfortunately or limited warranty contract states that we are not responsible for any damages that may occur using our products. want a new set of springs on us?"
Dont get me wrong, Comp is a great product and i believe you made a good choice at the time. Its just unfortunate that there was a defect on the product.
Comp warrants against defects but they make it clear of their obligation if such a defect would occur.
Comp is a MULTI million dollar company and they can tell you exactly how many batches of springs could possibly prematurely fail. They already know what the potential damage is if someone does break a spring.
Reputation is a huge factor in business, the sad thing is COMP is so big even if they have tons of unhappy customers they can stay afloat.
Goodluck man, I would go back with a set of dual springs.
Contact Richard at WCCH, he told me he has yet to see a set of those springs fail. Thats why I am running them on my new motor!
