help me understand 5.3 vs LS1
ok, I see some here have swapped Ls1s in to trucks. I see people say swap in a ls1. I dont understand. I know the ls1 is lighter, its a little bigger and make a little more power. I was under the impression that the 5.3 and the ls1, and the 6.0 for that matter, were basically the same motor, aside from the ls1 being aluminum and having a bit larger bore. the 5.3 will take all the same performance parts, ie heads cams, whatever the ls1 will take correct?
its been a while, but ive seen LS1s go for up to $2500, im sure you can get them for less, but you can get 5.3 pullouts all day for $300 or better yet you can get a truck that already has one in it.
I guess I just dont see the point of spending the money and going through the trouble of swapping in a LS1 for what seems to me a minimal performance gain, it seems like a lot more trouble than its worth. am I missing something here??
look Im not here to make anyone mad or get anyone riled, Im just trying to understand, maybe im missing some piece of the puzzle. its just that all the motors in the lsx family are capable of amazing power so easily.

The 4.8 and 5.3 share the same block and bore, just different strokes. The 5.3 and 5.7 ls1 share the same stroke, but different size bores. You can take a 4.8 or 5.3 and bore it out to a 5.7L (have to put an ls1 crank in a 4.8). The 6.0 is a different block all together, but shares the same basic design, just bigger.
You can use parts from any an LS1 in all the LS truck motors pretty much.
The reason why people swap LS1s into trucks is because of the alluminum block to keep the weight down as well as larger cubes. But it is becoming a less popular swap since most people opt for the 6.0 since it is cheaper, more powerful, and is a stronger block for FI/NO2.
So basically it depends on what you want to do with the truck.

while the 4.8/5.3/6.0 have a lot in common and will accept parts from another those same parts may not improve the performance or may even hurt it.
An LS1/6 is going to make better power mod for mod just due to its larger cubes but you will find on this site few who swap to the 5.7 liter but instead opt to the 6L.
