Default Help with my intake

Alright Im trying to work on one part of the truck at a time and now Im on to the intake system.
Its a 2000 sierra 5.3.

Since I read the boxes are sufficent stock, I cut a hole in the front of my box for added airflow. When I remove the passenger headlight it seems like it would be benificial but I have only ran it like that one time at the track because Im worried about dust entering easily.

I assume because my filter is more vulnerable to dirt that I should definitely stick with a stock type paper filter.? Plan on going to buy a fram today.

Now onto the tube. I plan on getting a Airraid tube really soon. the $120 price is whats been keeping me from getting it though.
How restrictive is the factory tube with the dual silencers? Will the airraid tube alone make a little difference?

Im not gonna but a Grantenelli MAF or descreen it or mess with the TB...
just looking for a little imput on making a reasonably priced yet effective intake.

Should I stick with a paper filter?
Buy the Airraid JR kit with tube and filter?
Buy just the airraid tube for $120 and a fram?

any help is appreciated.

I have the airraid setup on my truck and like it. I didn't see much of a difference with it with the stock setup. I would go with either the arraid or K&N setup for the price. The key is to get a setup that comes with a kit to block engine heat from getting sucked into the intake. Both above brands come with a steel barrier with rubber lining around the top, to prevent engine heat from getting sucked in. Lastly, any kind of decent after market cold air filter kit will trump stock paper filter flow.

thanks, but Im trying to keep the factory airbox if possible. I just dont really trust the K&N connon/gauze and the AEM BF dryflow system. If I could afford a SB or Voliant with the sealed box then Id get one of those. But Im trying to stay under the $100 mark when it comes to the intake. Now I have to decide between the $13 fram and the $50+ K&N, which Im afraid will let too many foreign particles in seeing as how Ive got a hole in the front of the airbox.

If I were modding the stock airbox, I'd get the new tube and one of the available DryFlow filters. I have an Amsoil dry filter in my Volant system and I've been very happy with it...no re-oiling and no chance of oil on the MAF. It feels as if it performs the same as the original Volant filter for what my butt meter is worth.

I just ordered a FRAM airhog off amazon for $15 shipped. Its supposed to be equivalent to a K&N drop in. its pre oiled gauze and unless I see a difference in airflow or mpg, Ill put it in the trash after a year or so instead of cleaning it and go back with a paper filter. I couldnt pass it up for that price.
