Since you're in CA, are you running manifolds or shorties, and do you have to smog every year? If you don't mind doing the work, you could get some LT's and either a catted or off road y-pipe, and swap em out when you have to smog. Does CA have the spot smog checks that I believe they used to have? If so, you might be in trouble there too

i have thorleys on there right now with a catless y pipe into a single gibson muffler. its not too loud, but its very raspy and thats what i cant stand. one of my cats was on the way out so i figured this would be the easiest way around that.

it runs better with no cats, but im guessing it will run almost as good with new cats and ill be happy with the way it sounds again.

unless i should put a bullet in from of the muffler or something instead?

The bullet will act as a resonator and should help with the rasp. You could also put resonators where the cats used to be (instead of the bullet), then it'll look somewhat legal

If you want to look legal but still have the performance you had without cats there, Get you a set of these dummy cats, and then the bullet in front of your muffler to get rid of the rasp..
