Default Help for us novice hot rodders

mjhoward just turned me on to a web site I'd never heard of that appears to have good insturctions covering how to do a lot of stuff. www.ls1howto.com

I just started looking at it tonight as I'm very nervous about tearing down my truck with no back up expert helper to guide me. I want to do my head/cam/meth/90mm tb/header/cutout installs myself... or most of it anyway (maybe not the headers & cut out).

I don't have much experience and what experience I do have was in 1962 and my friends are from the same era. None of us knows much about current technology but I did almost all the mechinaical part of the Radix install (had help with the wiring) and most of this work is mechanical... i.e. heads/cam etc. So I think I can do it... maybe I know I can do the work but I worry that it won't start and I'll have no where to turn.

Mark turned me on to the ls1howto site and it looks like that will help. Thought I'd pass it on.

Regards, Jim

I used the cam swap instructions from that site and they were awesome. That was the first internal engine mod I had ever attempted and I found the instructions to be very helpful...I'm sure you'll be fine.

I did a cam and lifter swap on my 5.3 which as Im sure oyu know you ahve to pull the heads to do the lifter swap,, and built my motor so I may know a few thigns to help you out. When are you planning on doing it? Im not an expert by any means but have been all through 3 different motors and built my 418 4 times before the clearances were right so I know these motors like the back of my hand. if anyone needs help on something pm me and Im sure I can help.

Thanks Cody.

If you could pm me your # that would be a good back up for me and I'd appreciate your advice/recommendations. Not sure when I'll start. Have to finish gathering the stuff and I'll be taking my time as I have some stuff powdercoated (got to do a slick install!.. it's a go and show truck! ). Julio at Alky Control likes to send the braided line cut to exact length so I'll have to get that mocked up and then send for the hose... couple days turnaround.

I expect to be torn down for a couple of weeks or more with the big reason being I have a bad knee that dictates that I can't be on my feet for more than a couple hours at a time so I'll be ******* around a lot and getting only a little done each day... which will drive me freakin crazy but..... the body is wearing out on me. Pisses me off And I also have a condition called peripherial neuropathy, which somehow diminishes the supply of nerve energy to my feet, and is very painfull. The cause is unknown but in my case is probably the result of my drinking back in the 70's which causes nerve damage later in life... like NOW. So the bottom liine is that with my **** drive to have everything done extremely neat and clean, plus my lack of know-how slowing me down, plus the really painful physical ****, It'll be a drag-*** project. Age 63 is kinda like having 120k on the truck. **** just starts wearing out... first one part then another until finally ya just have to park the ******. Hopefully I can keep'r running to 200k

During the rebuild I have to install the cam & new pushrods, heads w/Cometic gaskets & ARP head bolts, Alky Control meth kit, the 90mm tb with rebuilt J tube, 3" Radix pulley, Pacesetter lt's and a Street Pro cut-out, ARP rod bolts, a 34" radiator to replace my 28", electric fan, wb 02 guage and two Interceptor guages. I have the pillar pod all painted up and ready. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if I'm down a month or more. We're also buying a rental property and there will be work to be done there. Closing on it is in two weeks. **** I might just hire it all done and save myself a lot of pain.

Anyway... I appreciate your offer and if I do the job I'll be calling you.

Later, Jim

Jim, If it makes you feel any better I haven't even started on the engine build of my truck. I have to port the heads, fully assemble engine, set it in with the T56 and mock everything up, modify what needs to be to make the T56 work, then fab up everything for the turbo. I'll be lucky if my truck is running by the end of April . I just work too much
