looks kinda like a water trap thing for air compressors, not sure though..

It is. http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=prod...24-1126-IFA106 That's the exact one I bought. You can do it with any air compressor filter, just make sure it's 1/4" or 3/8". You'll also need some appropriate size barb fittings. The hose to use would be 3/8" fuel line.

Default Fixed Orifice PCV

Catch can looks "factory". Although those nasty little ends of the wire will get you eventually. Maybe bend them over? or hose clamps?

You may want to try the "Fixed Orifice PCV" # 12572717 made to reduced oil consumption if you don't already have one. AC Delco does not have a cross. You'll have to get this one at the dealer. Under $5.00. It might help a little.

I use/consume about 1/2 qt of Mobil 1 10W-30 every 3000 miles.

Oil is getting in but I wonder if any is passing through it (the Lowe's one) ?

So you pretty much put this between the PCV valve and the valve cover to catch the oil?
