Default HOMEMADE Air Box Lid Pics Part-1 (56k suffer)

I have been wanting a UPD lid, but they are out of business or something like that and I have heard of too many people having problems with them cracking so I decided to make my own. I started out with a stock air box and started cutting. With the help of some MDF, Fiberglass, angle grinder, and a ton of sand paper the mold was finished.

The Relief Mold

This is actually me second attempt. The first attempt ended with the mold not releasing and me taking a hammer to the mold out of pure frustration. I applied wax to the mold to prevent it from sticking to the fiberglass, well that did not work. The second attempt I used Aluminum foil and cover the mold and that allowed the mold to release properly.

Raw Intake Lid straight out of the mold.

Notice the lid allow for the use of the factory MAF coupler/clamp. The Lid consists of about 3 coats of fiberglass, 1 contiunous layer of matting cloth, about 3 layer around the screw holes and MAF mounting locations, then another 3 coats of fiberglass. The lid is pretty strong, but still flexible.

I still have to finish sanding the Lid to get it smooth and paint it. The lid was mocked up so that the intake tube would line up straight with the TB with just a 45 down and a 90 to the TB. The intake tube will be in Part 2 or 3, which will be made out steel and around the factory fan shroud. I will post up more info later.

Any opinions, thoughts or critisms??

I'm very impressed. It's great to see home fab work, especially when it looks good.

Thanks! It has taken about a week to get this far. It will look better once it is finished.

not bad, what kind of resin did you use with the glass?

about the intake tube, it'd be interesting to see it made out of a very heat resistent material, or make one out of a plastic type material and insulate it to help control intake temps.

The resin is just regular fiberglass resin you can buy at Home Depot. I used the cloth type of matting instead of the regular flaky stuff, less mess that way and easier to work with.

The plans for the intake tube will be mandrel bent 4' inch steel, bought from airflow.com. Then I was thinking of wrapping it in header wrap and then fiberglassing over the header wrap, so it would be smooth.
