Don't need spring comp. but have to use a jack under the lower a arm to release the tension of the spring very slowly

The Hotchkis 2-4 kit is great with the front and rear anti-sway bars. When I did mine on my '99, the instructions called for you to break loose the bottom ball joint to get the front springs out. I couldn't break it free and I beat the hell of a fork trying. Go for the top one, much easier. Just make sure you put a jack underneath, then slowly let it drop once the ball joint is broken free. Also make sure you put the spring in right side up. Pneaumatics separator would be a huge help.

Your load handling capabilities are going to go south. Their springs are designed for handling only. I have roughly a 200lb toungue weight boat that would drop my truck to the point where it looked like it was almost bottomed out. You can get helper springs to maintain proper height. Just in case you didn't know.

Also, before you go banging on the ball joint, go ahead and get new ones. Just in case you mangle the dust boot. If you don't, return them.

can you just take the spring out the back side (towards the center of the grille)
without fooling with the ball joints?

That is how I did mine. Used two jacks to support each back arm of the lca, removed the bolts, and slowly lowerd till all tention was taken off the spring. Since the Hotchkis spring is shorter, it is easy to get in there.
