Will gutting the cats make the exhaust flow unsteady and cause a lot of turbulence?

It wil flow better ... those cats aren't as bad as the older days, but they are still contrictive as hell. You will get a little more exhaust tone too.

I got a hell of alot more exhaust tone. I don't like it around 2500rpms becasue it pops and sounds like ***. I am going to true duals and an xpipe when I get the 300 dollars. 80 dollars is exactly what it cost me to get mine cut off. watch out for the passenger side cat. it's a bitch to reseal after you cut it off. very hard to seal the top.

The shell that used to be full of zirconia is now
a resonator and it may make a note you don't
like. Usually resonators are meant to mellow it
out but an undesigned one might worsen things.
The cats surely do muffle the pulse nature of
exhaust, capillary-tube mufflers with some
chemical activity is what they are.

If you need to worry about visual inspections, you can have a pipe welded through the cat housing so that it still looks stock but flows straight through. And yes, there is a lot of turbulance from gutting the cat housing out that screws up flow.

After I gutted mine, it got loud as hell. I run a Dynomax welded muffler and on interstate it will make your ears bleed.
