HPP tuning, 160* stat and Gas Octane?
I posted that I installed a 160* in my truck and was wondering if I should change the grade of gas I'm using. Before the 160* stat, I was already using the 93 HPP tuning and 160* stat setting (still had stock 195* stat) with 87 oct gas. I had no pinging, knocking, coughing or wheezing from the engine. Doesn't a cooler running engine help prevent detonation (pinging)? So, if I had no pinging with the stock stat, wouldn't I have less of a chance to get pinging with the cooler stat? When I had the stock stat, I did try 91 oct gas and it made NO difference in performance or mileage so I went back to 87 oct. What ya think, go to higher oct gas or stand pat since I don't have a pinging problem with current set up?

Can you trust a Ford guy?
You will receive nothing positive from using a higher octane fuel than what either the PCM and/or a chip is tuned for. In fact, using a higher octane can slow you down as that fuel will burn slower than a lower octane gas. The octane rating is only there to prevent pinging/detonation. "Stand pat" and save $$$ with the 87 octane.
A colder 'stat should help in preventing pinging. I use one in my L.

Ford Guy?! Just Kidding. Sounds like good advice to me! I've heard that you do gain ZERO from higher octane gas unless you need to help with detonation, and since I don't have any, I didn't think I needed it. By the way, I'm a car and truck inthusiast, I don't get into the brand war . I would love to get an 03 Harely truck with the Silver two-tone paint, that truck is sweeeett!

Hey hey hey! Don't be mean to the Ford guy...look at my sig! Mine was free and granted it is still not too fast (mid 15's prolly) I do enjoy it as much or more than my Chevy. Parts are way cheaper as well as everywhere for a SBF and it is highly comical speeding on by people and an '80's Ford lighting up the rear tire (just wait until I have my Eaton in!) from a dead stop going straight. Come on...185hp/270tq stock from a 5.0!
Jim, keep with the 87 octane. If there was no knocking before, there sure as hell won't be any now. Have you noticed your MPGs change at all?

I was being nice to the Ford guy, just a little humor thrown his way . Trucks running really well with the 160* stat, 0-60's are a touch quicker (.1) but it's hard to be consistent with tire spin. It'll spin them pretty easy now, a little easier since I put the 160* stat in, my 40-60 passing times are quicker now too. I filled up this morning, got 15.5 mpg which right on where I normally am. So all is good, so far. Waiting to go back to the track, I want to get the ported TB first but Shaner hasn't gotten back to me yet, I left him another E-mail but nada .

I know, just playin'
Cool, gas milage is the same. Do ya know what temp the truck goes into closed loop?
I believe Shaner has a phone number at 972 - 264 - 0684. They are just about 12 miles from me according to MapQuest. Hahha. If I knew the inlet diameter of the Magnacharger I would either get mine ported or buy a BBK.
