Default HYPERTECH Powerstat for 2005 5.3L

Getting ready to do the hypertech programer #30022. I want to change the stat to lower the temp. Hypertech says they don't make a stat for 2004-2005 GM, only 99-03 Hyertech #1014. Will this one work for a 2005?

Looking in my Chilton manual (99-2005), Section 3-3, Replacing the thermostat. It doesn't say anything about there being a differnce between 03 and 04. There's only one set of instructions for the V-8. Also, it says the thermostat, housing and the o-ring are preassembled as a single unit and must be replaced as a unit. Their pic looks like the stat would just come out of the housing???

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there with 2005's that have changed their stats. Can you just get a good stat at autozone or is the stat and housing all connected?

Also in my last truck ('93 350 TBI) I ran a 160 stat and liked it. Any suggestions on the 160 or 180 stat??

Thanks for your help.
Corey

You can go to O'Rileys or about any parts store and get a 160 stat. I don't believe the housing is part of your stat on the 05. Also I would recommend that if you have no purchased the Hypertech programmer, DONT. Get a real tune, a mail-order tune at least. They are much better.

just go to autozone or any parts store and get a tstat it will come with the neck oring and tstat ( or at least it did on my 02 i think they changed in 03)

i put a 180 in mine when i replaced my water pump

ive heard of gettin worse mileage from a 160 stat and i wouldnt get one unless is was goin blown turbo'd or nitrous'd

Even with a 160 stat, your engine temp is gonna be about 172-174, has been on every one I tuned, and I monitored it with EFILive scan tool. I don't buy into a 160* thermostat decreasing mileage and a 180* being o.k.

I've always done a 160, so if the 160 runs at 172-174 then I don't see how I could justify doing a 180.

THey only reason the 160* may cause decrease in gas mileage is hte comp can read that the truck isnt warmed up yet. All can be changed in tuning.

Do the 180*. Stay away from the 160* until you have some big power numbers.
Your 05' T-stat is replaceable without purchasing the entire housing.
You sould be able to pick it up for $20.

Why didn't you go with the 180* then?
