I did the w4me tune and had the local Chevy dealer do the crank relearn for about $15. It realy likes 89 octane.

The 4.8L will sound pretty much like the 5.3L. Not really any difference.

If you are going the handheld route, I would recommend steering clear of Hypertech. A cow orker got one and all it did was make his engine ping like crazy. If you search both this board and others, you will find many people have had trouble with them.

Funny thing is, I use it more as a scan tool than I ever did programing. But I have heard they have got better.

4.8, Not every tune is going to need a relearn, A Nelson tune might need one too. Just never know. I wouldn't waste my time with a hand held, for the price of a hand held, buy HP TUners and learn to tune it your-self.
I bought a Predator when i first got my truck like second week and knew nothing about tunes etc...learned alot in the last almost two years...anyway..i use it for a scan tool as well.I wanted to sell it but then i was like...well then i'm gonna need a scan tool lol.
I feel ta hell with it if i'm down enough to have to sell it so be it but until that time shes my scan tool!!!!!!
I did get some decent performance gains with it though. The new ones from what i hear can remove tourque managment and such....which would be a big thing on a handheld since the other ones don't do that.
If you wanted a handheld that is.

sleeper if u can tell me where i can find a hand held for 150 let me know. ask around i don't think anyone would suggest a hand held over a mail order. which one are u using? any dyno #'s? lot of guys get 20-30 hp out of a mail order. unless u own a diesel hand held r over rated.

ANY time a PCM is swapped, a crank learn is NEEDED. Even if it doesnt throw a code, it is needed. Sure you can get away with out it, but its just one more saftey feature to get the proper info to the PCM in case of a misfire. Im not 100%, but if you dont do the re-learn, it makes sence that the PCM could possibly pick up a false misfire and your performance would suffer. On the other hand, it could fail to pick up a real misfire and affect your performance in other ways.

Here is my 1st base run at 500 miles 234/256 catback & airaid jr and my last run 265/298

This run was the same day as base run with handheld 247/276
I got 13/21 with the handheld and another 16/13 with smoothing out the a/f
thats a 29/34 tune that i can put on or take off in 15min.

I am not saying that a handheld is better than a mail order tune, just that a handheld can give a stock 5.3 some good gains and alot of tuning options for the 300.00 price tag.
