i've got an 03 silverado w/ the 4.8 and am looking to put a cam in. i'm basically just going for something that's pretty loud w/ a good lope. hp isn't that big of a deal cause of extensive customization to other areas of the truck... it's got well over 1000 lbs in the bed from stereo equipment and the 22's dont help matters either. what would be some good specs to go by when picking out the cam. also, should i be looking for a stall too or would that just add to tranny stress and burn the tires???

 

Hmmm... Well - if you're looking for lope, you're looking for a cam that'll probably have a degraded low-end of the powerband. So you may need the converter...

With the smaller displacement of the 4.8, it'll lope easier than a motor like the 6.0, so you have a few more options in cams.

It sounds like you're looking for a cam just to make some noise and compliment the appearance of the truck, right? I **LOVE** the lope of the GM Hotcam (specs are similar to mine, with about 10* more duration on the intake and exhaust). The downside is that I hear the cam is not all that easy to dial in, and is a little "quirky" for it's size.

There are other popular cams out there like the TR220-112 and TR224-112, that can probably be picked up easily used, and fairly cheap. Here's a clip of my TR220-112 at 650rpm. I believe it's 01Thunder(?) who has a TR224-112 in his 4.8 - he has some video up on this forum somewhere.

If you do want to retain more driveability, my VHP cam seems to be GREAT for that. It doesn't really lope all that much, but the driveability and torque of the cam is awesome. They say 'if you want a cam to lope harder, just ask'. The VHP cam page has a few soundclips up for you to hear. What I really like about their grinds is that there is little to no valvetrain noise. Some other agressive cams will make enough noise to be quite noticeable outside the vehicle... something you might not want.

 

check out october 2004 issue of car craft. lingenfelter got a 5.3 to 413 crankshaft horsepower with only a cam 9(229/242 on 114.5)and headers. hope it helps some. pretty good article.

have you been around for a while in the performance forum NakedAV? i am looking for someone who has run a can somewhere around this size in a bone stock 5.3? i don't think it would even run on the street. It made a good article though. lol

 

they also lost a buttload of tq down low. And gain the hp way up there, i think it was in the 7,000 RPM range.

 

yeh i'm pretty much just trying to compliment the appearance of the truck... looking for a good sound... also what would be a good way to run the exhaust... i've heard true duals thru single chamber flows and then just bullets... any ideas?

 

I gained 20 hp from the TR224-112 cam..
sounds really healthy to.. real head turner when sitting at a light or idling thru a parking lot

 

What kind of computer mods did you have to do with the cam?? Also what springs, lifters, rockers, are you running?
