Ahhh, ok. That MIGHT be a problem then. Unless I went with a tube chassis or front section lol. When I get the motor, I'll have to get some old headers from someone, or eBay for cheap.

I have a local shop that could make me some. But at $20 a bend not including materials. I think I'll research some better options first.

Just curious, is there a good piston to solve the break down problem? I'd like to solve any rotating assembly problems ahead of time, even without a ton of parts available. Rod bolt will get swapped to some ARP or stronger ASAP.

If I could find all of the right parts that are strong but light, I'd be willing to build my own stroker kit as long as I knew what would work.

Raylar has pistons that are rated at 800+hp. A far as cranks they are internal balanced so they are different from the 454 that are external balanced but Raylar is work on stroker cranks.

OK, I might just have to wait on the crank then. 800hp pistons will do I think. . . for now lol.

Thanks!

Default weak pistons ? rods?

I've read that the pistons are weak in the 8100. Last Friday my 8100 sent two rods through the oil pan, turning about 4800 rpm, had rev limiter set at 5400, so not too sure what went wrong. I know the cam i installed made a lot more mid-upper power, not sure if it made the pistons fail or what happened. I have yet to pull the motor out, i do know on the #5 piston the rod is free from the piston and i can spin it around and around on the crank journal, broken near the big end of the rod, another rod is broke near the wrist pin that i can tell, i'll know more when i pull the motor.

does the marine applications use stronger conponents then the HD truck engines?

i found a complete marine 8100 minus the block (cracked) if my blocks still okay i'll probably go to the marine parts. but if they are just as week, i'll upgrade

i'll post some pics when i find what happened. oddly a week prior to this happeneing i bought a 5.3 and a 6.0L from a dealership for $150. the 5.3 had two rods busted in the same fashion with a hole in the block, the 6.0L has oil consumption but runs.

The marine uses the same crank, rod, and pistons as the truck. I would use a set of Raylar pistons and a eagle H-beam rods 6.7 long. You should be able to pick up the rods for $500 and the pistons for around $650
Sorry about the luck.

the problem with the pistons is the pin location. the pin sits so high in the piston that the ring grooves have to be moved up thus decreasing the meat between the top compression ring groove and the top of the piston. Running a forged piston may help combat the breakage but in all reality it is a function of a stroked engine. the marine version is basically the truck engine with looser cylinder clearances and bearing clearances to allow for extended high rpm operation. And of course a different oil pan and camshaft and tune.

I am not saying it can't be built to take boost but just that I have seen more than my fair share of them coming apart with more than 5-6# of boost. buyer beware is all.

Default 8.1

Man am I glad to see this thread!

I own a avalanche with the 8.1 496

Hvae a diablo predator on it now and of course Nitrous

But I have been toying with the idea of making this thing a monster.

First I'd love to make some all motor power

Any of you guys know what you got out of any motor mods to the 8.1?

would like to get it into the 500's considering ray's stuff but it's expensive anyone else make motor stuff for it?

Then after I make the motor power considering an sts type turbo..

I think the potential for 750-1000 HP is there

Also anyone know what he 80e tranny is rated or capable of? I asdsume it's quite a bit since it's a hd tranny for towing

Wish there was a forum out there for the 8.1

All motor I got 322whp 433wtq on the bottle 504whp 640wtq. I was told that there was probably another 50hp in a good tune but I never found out. My ls1-edit showed up 2 days after I blew it up.
AZ-Speed has a few thing for 8.1l but they are more interested in selling you a complete engine for $20,000 but it is a 535cid 625hp. It mainly consist of a regrind stock forged crank, A new intake, ported stock heads, and a custom grind cam.
You can get a 80e built to hold 1000hp.
