Default Ignition timing, To much without pinging?

Ok, i have read a little about ignition timing and was reading that to much can hurt your in upper rpms. Now my question is can you have to much timing without detonation or knock retard. What i mean is can you lose horse power if your timing is to far advanced even if your not expierencing knock retard or detonation? i would think as long as your not pinging then you should be able to get more hp the more you advance, but what i have been reading by doing searchs contradicts my thought. I read somewhere that someone was making more horsepower with 25 degrees of timing than 30, and he wasn't getting any detonation or knock retard at 30. So can to much timing hurt performance even if your not getting any detonation?

Default

I ran 39 and dropped it down to 24 and made more hp
I had no knock at 39 because the afr was so low (flooded)

The way I understand it is timing fuel and knock work together
you can have alot of timing if you dump the fuel to it
but youre killing power by the added fuel
too much fuel and it is just raw fuel in the combustion chamber that
doesnt get burned
which in turn takes up space of the af mixture losing power and gas

People ive talked to said around 28-30
and they would be scared to run any more

If this is incorrect please feel free to correct me
because I would like to know myself

Hit your target A/F first, then address timing.

As you increase timing, add in a point of fuel per degree. Check your logs and any dyno runs you may have to verify gains. If adding in timing does not do anything for you, back off a degree to play it safe.
