yeah you need to adjust the fan turn on temps to take advantage of the new thermostat. And the 706 heads aren't any better than the heads you have now.

I don't think you can it down to an actual 160 (from what I've read on here over the years)...but am not altogether sure about that. Also, won't some things suffer at much-lower temps...like fuel economy?

That thermostat starts opening at 160*, it doesn't mean that your coolant temps will stay right at 160*...

but a 25* differnece doesnt make sense to me. if you run a 160 in a carb small block thats what it'll run on the temp gauge, im thinkin that the way the gauge reads in different or somthing................

If you're going by the factory gauge, you're not getting an accurate reading, the factory gauge isn't very accurate at all, it actually kinda goes up in steps. Either way though, 160 stat isn't going to have the engine running at 160...it depends on what temp your fans are set at. As for a 160 stat and a clutch fan, the engine will still heat up, and maybe run around 175-185 depending on the ambient temp.

but you would think on a 4hr trip doing 80 the whole way, with it being 35 outside it would move a little, but nope, doesnt budge, it runs the same around town when its 80 out.........

The temp sensor for the gauge is in the head and the heads are hotter than the block. the block and radiator will be around 160 to 180. mine does the same thing. it's definatly cooler than the 195 stat and thats all I wanted.
