what I always did on my s-dime which always did the same thing you are describing. Like one member said get a piece of tubing and open your farthest bleeder and run that tube into a container of brake fluid. What that does is when the pedal travels upward it also sucks fluid back into the lines as well. Being the ABS is the highest sealed point in the braking system other than the master itself you have to put pressure behind it to get the air out. That is how the pressure bleeder will help or just do what was described and you should be good to go.

For what it's worth, brake feel has improved even more - and I haven't touched anything since Sunday. I definitely take back what I said.
I'm really surprised by the amount of bite and the added feel. I'll try the rears this weekend.

If you are manually bleeding the brakes its a 2 man job unless you have a 1way bleeder. You pump the brakes 3 times then hold it down, then the other person releases the valve letting the fluid out. Then they close the valve and you pump agian once the value has been shut.
I see no reason why the bleeder would be open while you are pumping the brakes unless you are doing it wrong
