Default Installing a oil pump

Ok, ordered everything for the cam install, the thing that i am concerned with the most is installing the oil pump. I want to make sure that the o ring is installed right the first time so I dont have to open the motor back up again. I have seen ls1 how to sight on the installation of the oil pump, but it doesnt describe very well on were the o ring goes on. Does anyone have any input on this or pictures

The o-ring fits on the snout from the pick-up tube that bolts to the pump. You'll see it for sure when you disconnect the pick-up tube from the pump.

To make sure you don't pinch the o-ring, get the pump fitted on the crank gear (PITA), then spin the pump over to the tube and get it seated without forcing it and bolt the pick-up tube to the pump. The tube should just slide in very easily without any force. Then and only then, bolt the pump back to the block. If you try to bolt the pump to the block first, it can be very easy to pinch the o-ring. The other way completely takes away that chance.

When I put mine on, I had a bugger of a time gettingthe pickup tube to line up correctly when I put the oring on the tube first. After pulling it off and putting the oring in the pump first, the tube lined up much better. Also be very careful with the bolt. Even using a piece of wire, I dropped mine in the oil pan. Luckly I was able to get it out with a magnet.

Good advice! The LS1HowTo article is great and the o-ring will make sense once you get the pump off/on.
Good luck! It's not as bad as it looks.

Yea, that oil pump isnt much fun at all. Make sure you lube the hell out of the o-ring before you tighten down the pickup tube. I soaked my oil pump in a small tub of oil overnight before I put it on. Just for piece of mind.
