Default Intermittent starting problem

I'm having an intermittent starting problem with my truck. Sometimes I will go to start it up, and it will click once and then nothing. If I turn the key a few times, sometimes it will click, sometimes I will hear absolutely nothing, and sometimes it will actually start. It will do the same thing hot or cold. If I turn turn the key enough times it will eventually engage the starter and the truck will fire right up. Sometimes it will work first try, sometimes 2nd or 3rd, and sometimes I'll have to do it 10-15 times. Does the same thing in P and N.

I thought it was a neutral safety switch problem, so I replaced that along with one of the connectors that was damaged. That didn't fix it.

Any ideas?

replace your ignition 1 relay, it will get corrosion inside and not allow the full ignition voltage to the starter...

it may sound stupid, but check for corrosion between your terminals and battery- and also check the torque on the battery bolts.

i work in a gmc dealer and atleast once a month i get a truck in for intermitant no crank- or the selinoid click then nothing, and its cause by corrosion build up or loose or stripped battery bolts.

if all is well there- check the ignition relay contacts for corrosion, loose, or backed out terminals, if you dont find anything your going to have to duplicate it, and check to see if you have full voltage going to the starter selinoid

hope this helps

I'd go with a defective Ignition switch or very possibly a bad Crank sensor.

Sounds like a bad connection at the battery, or a bad battery cable, or a bad starter solenoid.

As mentioned, things to check would be starter, battery cables, ignition switch, etc. If you have a full 12v getting to the starter solenoid when the problem occurs, then the starter is faulty. If not, you must check for voltage drops across the wiring, relays, ign switch and any other items in the starter circuit. (this is assuming that the battery is OK)

It was having all kinda of issues starting last night, took me about 30 clicks to finally get it to start. Gave me some time to mess with it though, and the starter was clicking every time but not turning over. I picked up a new one today. I'm about 99% it's not the cable because I just looked at them when I reconnected the battery when I put the new engine in.

New starter fixed the problem.
