I believe this is a mechanical secondary carb. There isnt black smoke at idle. When its put to the floor it leaves a black trail of smoke. How do I adjust the secondary metering rods? I advanced timing a little and there was less black smoke. Its fouling plugs so I assume it must be rich. Everyone tells me to get a 600 so should I replace the secondaries with jets closer to the size of the 600 secondaries?

What edelbrock carb do you have? Do you have a part number? I was thinking you had the performer series carb which is based off of the Carter AFB- small carb with the fuel inlet on the passenger rear. If you are only getting the heavy black smoke under full throttle then look at your secondary metering rods. Your carb should have come with a tuning manual that wil tell you what you need.
Also, look on the LS1TECH classifieds, somebody there had a carb for sale with the tuning kit, he may seperate.

depending on what carb you have, as a matter of fact, I was just looking at an Edelbrock(carter AFB) in Pep Boys today. If you need to lean out the secondaries, you might be able to get away with just changing the rod, sometimes it will take a combination of a different jet and needle to get the desired fueling. You'll have to play with it some, thats why I recommended a kit, it's likely you won't nail it the first change, although you might. Good Luck!

bought some different jets to play with this weekend. I also bought a timing light and a new set of plugs. I will start with timing and go from there. Any ideas on timing...everone says 10-16 initial and total of 34-36. I dont know how or where to start but I guess I will figure it out. Thanks for all the help.

First I would set your timing @ 32-34* total advance at 3000 rpms, I would say 36* but you say traction is already a problem so run a little less timing and have more power up top. Then I would drop the rear jets down a couple of sizes, run it wide open, stop and get a plug reading. They should have a tannish-brown color. If not try some different jets.
