Default just talked to whipple tech support, very helpfull

i can't believe it, i sent a few emails back and forth to whipple and they were very helpfull.

here is what i asked them, if anyone else can share any info please do. i told the guy i had a 5.3, now i have a 6.0 with exhaust and i would like to do a heads and cam motor, maybe even a 415ci, will the whipple be able to support that engine or will it be a restriction. he told me you can spin the whipple up to 15000 rpm before it needs some kind of special lubrication and above 15000 rpm it starts to over heat the air.

well right now with the pullys i have i am at 12000rpm just steping up to a 415 i would be around 13,600rpm to maintain the boost, then add heads and cam, not sure how much faster the pully would need to spin then but there is 1400 rpm avaliable for that so it looks like it would feed a heads and cam 415 and still be withing operating limits. he also told me it is the exact same compresor on both the 4.8/5.3/6.0/8.1, just diferent rpm's.

just something else for me to think about, a $500 nitrous setup or an $8000 engine

funny i called whipple and mentioned the word cam and the dude imediatly said i could not use wipple? the thing i called them about is, do they have a up grade. for example ati is putting a p-1sc on stock trucks so with heads and cam i would step up to the d-1sc because if flows more cfm. your motor flows better also with h/c so i do not think that you would get the benifits you should with a super charges that makes a stock truck run good. you would need to up grade. wipple from what i have seen and what the guy told me is for a stock motor. the reason i called them was to see if they had a up grade that flowed more cfm.i do not know if i am thinking right but it seems to me with heads cam you need a compressor that flows more cfm. i am not talking about boost(pressure) i am talking about cfm(amount of air moved). let me know what you think

more cfm comes with more rpm's, i am not looking at raising my boost at all, probably even go down a little but alot more cfm, since they use the same compresor for an 8.1 seems like it should be able to feed a hoped up 6.8L(415)

anyone else have any oponions here, would i be silly to try and keep the whipple/. should i just go with a 10.5-1 compresion 415 and hit it with the bottle and forget about the blower? i think it will feed it just fine from what the whipple guy told me

Go with a 10.5:1 415 and feed it the sauce.

I'm curious as to how much horsepower the whipple will support? The ATI P-1SC-H and D-1SC can support 825/925 respectively.

You also have to remember that tuning may present some problems once you exceed the MAF/tuning limits with the supercharger. This problem has been worked around by a few though. There are some post discussing this in the Forced Induction section.

With the nitrous(wet kit) all you have to worry about is if you have the fuel volume available and if your tune is good. The computer/injectors don't have to worry about trying to add more fuel.

I'm thinking 450rwhp should be attainable with a very streetable N/A 415....Add on a 150 shot and

Sounds like your getting serious.

"Sounds like your getting serious. "

maybe, i like to dream for a few months, give myself time to change my mind, then get busy so it could be awhile before i do anything. the easyest and cheepest thing i could do is throw in some forged pistons and hit it with a 50-125shot.

pistons, rings, pins, gaskets, head bolts, rod bolts, nx kit, fuel pump, machine work. all for around $2000, then hang the f#@k on!! all this for less than the cost of just a stroker forged crank. hmmm.

my level IV flp tranny should be here sometime next week. can i get on the fastest truck list with a gtech time? i wont put the mph on there. thinking mid 13's, it is running hard with the cold weather.

If 15000 is their limit, I'd say that 13xxx doesn't give you any room to grow and would probably cause some premature wear.

Here is what we know:

The Whipple on your 5.3 didn't give you the power you wanted.

The 6 liter upgrade really made little difference in your ET over the 5.3 (considering you added a Yank converter at the same time).

Complete exhaust with ASM headers and 3" duals didn't help much.

LS1 edit didn't reduce your knock or really assist in tuning of the whipple.

BUT-

You are willing to spend the money and want performance.

You have A TON of excellent parts to work with (excluding the whipple).

My Opinion (not that it counts)-

Sell the whipple before you bust it. Buy a dual stage nitrous kit. You may lose $1000 - $1500 on the whipple kit, BUT you will be faster. And you will have money left over after selling the whipple to get either heads done or pay on a stroker upgrade. With a 400+ iron bloc and forged pistons on the juice, 12s would be no problem. You won't get to the 12s running a whipple.

I went through the same thing. I had the taste of nitrous before I installed the Whipple. I knew pretty quick that it didn't give me anything near the 50% increase in power that they claim. I ran my 13.9 on the first time I ever sprayed the juice (I installed it the night before). I ran a 15.0 with the whipple after having it 2 months and tuning it w/ LS1 edit. I did gain power in the 2000 - 3500 range, but it died after that. There are better choices of superchargers for our trucks.

But, if you are set on boost as your power adder of choice, go with a turbo. I don't have any good reasons for saying that. It would be really cool to have a turbo setup on one of these trucks. I don't know of any others w/ a turbo.

i hear what you are saying but you left out part of the equasion, i have been fighting knock retard(real or false, not sure) this whole time and didn't even know it, with a 20% desenatation of the knock sensors the truck is finialy running hard and i sure dont hear any knock. it pulls hard from the bottom to the top, i can be going 80mph and floor it and it climbs to 120 fast.

i like and want to hear more oponions, and now that i think about it if i was going to do an all out heads and cam 4xx engine i think i would toss the whipple. of course a turbo would be the best but a huge pain to put together.

i have another option , just hit what i have with a 50/75shot and see how long it lasts. i could do that now, it wouldn't kill me if the engine let go because i still have the 5.3, it would be a shame if it really came apart hard and wasn't rebuildable or took out a head or something like that but i bet that would get me in the 12's. i am very anxious to see what i it is runing once i get that tranny in. if i am running 13.5's now would that change your view at all?

big tex what is your idea on what i should use a roots style blower or a cintrifical style. like you were saying the wipple fals off on top end is it a roots style thing or is it a wipple thing. in the forced induction forum they were talking about a turbo kit for the trucks being made or something.but i do not know. any way i go there will be a lot of boost.

Well.... maybe. I really hope that the cooler weather is helping out.

You have spent way too much money to be in the 14s. Granted, an extended cab 4x4 isn't really the best platform to build a rocket from, but I am right there with you. You do have power on demand with the blower that nitrous wont give you for daily driving. But, if you had all your upgrades minus the whipple, and add in nitrous....

You have a nice large torque converter, LS1 edit tuning, 01 6 liter motor (40 more cubic inches), better heads, full length headers, dual 3" exhaust, larger radiator, better electric fans, 40 whatever pound fuel injectors, in addition to a whipple supercharger. 13.5 in the 1/4 mile should be a memory to you now.

What you really need is a way to intercool / aftercool or whatever the whipple system.

Sleeper -

I am by far an expert on supercharging. But, I know that with the whipple I had issues with heat. They (whipple) claim that their unit makes less heat and is more efficient that the others. That may be true, but there is no intercooler option for it. So, if you find a kit with a cooler, it WILL be better than the whipple. The lightning has cooling and it runs great (plus it has lower compression).

A turbo would be too expensive. I was just kidding about that, although it would be nice.

My whipple made alot of boost down low. Maybe thats good - maybe not. I was getting alot of knock at part throttle and low rpms (normal driving) because it was pushing 4 psi of hot air at me @1800 rpms. That power is good for towing and such, but not for peak performance. A centrifugal charger (with an intercooler) and a torque converter would be my choice if I did it again.
