Default Lap Joint or Butt Joint?

Trying to order all I need for my header install, and know that I need band clamps..

But there are two kinds, lap and band joints. Which one do I need? It's going on a slip fit connection of course, and I don't want to use the U bolts.

I'm thinking lap joint, but want to be completely sure.

If you are going to use mild steel headers and pipes, use a but joint, if you have stainless go with the lap joint...

Thanks. They are stainless so lap it is!

But why does the material make a difference? Very curious.

Mild steel will rust within the lap, makes it almost impossible to get them apart without heating them and beating them up. Stainless doesn't rust( if its a decent grade) and will come apart much much easier..

Thanks alot!

So am I correct in assuming the lap joint is slightly larger on one end to accomodate where they come together at, while the butt joint is one size?
